Bruce Langdon
Bruce’s involvement in theatre began around the age of 14 and within a few years he was
acting, directing and designing for some of the more progressive amateur ensembles which
flourished in 1970s Melbourne.
This internship was the catalyst for a journey that has seen him explore a myriad of styles
and forms along with a repertoire of work as diverse and wide-ranging as NY’s Broadway
and Off-Broadway, London’s West End, Chekhov, Shakespeare, Webster, Marlowe and,
particularly in recent years, the new work of scores of local playwrights through projects for
the likes of Melbourne Writers’ Theatre, Short And Sweet, Baggage Productions’ Madwomen
Monologues, Ella Filar’s Krows Bar Kabaret and Play Six.
It was after touring Australia in the ensemble of the Broadway version of Gilbert & Sullivan’s
Pirates of Penzance over three years in the mid-80s that Bruce joined the Stage Theatre
Company, an ambitious collective dedicated to the performance of Shakespeare and his
near contemporaries. This was a particularly absorbing and enriching period of creativity
which resulted in his first major staging of Macbeth, with Tom Bradley in the title role.
Tom’s taut new edition of the text has allowed for an exhilarating reworking, refining and
reimagining of that production, now featuring an ensemble of committed and outstanding
performers drawn from the many companies Bruce has had the privilege of working with
through the intervening years
